Kicking Off Healthy Vision Month with Basic Eye Care Tips

May 9, 2013

Celebrate May’s Healthy Vision Month by incorporating these tips into your life.

Many of us take our vision for granted on a day-to-day basis. In fact, it is only when something goes wrong, such as pink eye or a dry eyes, when we begin to appreciate just how great our vision is when our eyes are healthy. Therefore, it is important that we do everything we can to maintain healthy eyesight all year long and take any steps that we can to keep our vision nice and strong.

To help reinforce the importance of eye health this month and all year long, we are celebrating Healthy Vision Month all throughout the month of May. And to kick off this month of healthy vision, we are sharing four of our top vision tips that will keep your eyes feeling fresh and strong long after Healthy Vision month is over.

Wear Safety Goggles

Whenever you are performing dangerous tasks, such as working with airborne materials at home or working with sharp things at work, make sure that you are wearing eye protection. You should also wear proper safety goggles when you are playing contact sports such as hockey, lacrosse or baseball. This will help to prevent injury to your eyes and also will improve your game by providing clarity and ease of mind.

Eat Right

Just as a proper diet goes a long way towards keeping our bodies healthy, a good mix of fruits, vegetables and vitamins can also do wonders for our eye health. For instance, studies have shown that helpful nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamins C and E may help to ward off age-related vision problems such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Eating right paired with a regular exercise routine can also help you to maintain a healthy weight, which can ward of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes―the leading cause of blindness in adults.

Wear Sunglasses

The UV exposure that our eyes can get when we are outside in the sunshine is extremely dangerous to our vision. In fact, too much UV exposure makes you much more likely to get cataracts or macular degeneration. Therefore, be sure that you are wearing sunglasses whenever you are outside―even in the cold months! Be sure to choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays, as these will protect your eyes the best.

Get Regular Check Ups

One of the single most important thing that you can do for healthy vision is to have regular eye examinations. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends an eye exam every two years once you reach your 40s, and an eye exam every single year after the age of 65. These exams will help identify any vision problems that may be arriving for the first time, and catching them early will help prevent these problems from developing further as you age.
