Summer Eye Care Tips

May 4, 2017

With summer right around the corner, you’re probably planning some weekend getaways for camping, concerts, biking, or any other great warm-weather activities. You’ll certainly remember to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated and sunscreen to keep your skin protected, but do you have a plan for protecting your eyes?

The UV rays from the sun are damaging to eyes, and can cause cataracts and other eye ailments as we age. The best thing to do is to protect your eyes from these threats throughout the year, but especially during the summer.

Sunglasses Are Your Friend

We can’t repeat this enough. Put on sunglasses when you go outside in the summer. And we don’t mean the plastic ones that you got as a free gift for signing up for something outside the grocery store. Your sunglasses don’t have to be designer, but they do need to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for polarized lenses and UV protection when you go shopping for sunglasses, and when in doubt, ask your eye doctor for a recommendation.

Using sunglasses that are simply tinted lenses can actually hurt your eyes. The tint blocks glare and your eyes widen, but all this does is let in more harmful UV rays.

Add A Hat

A hat with a good brim can cut down on the sunlight that isn’t blocked by your sunglasses. Unless you’re using wrap around sunglasses, there are still areas where sunlight and UV rays can slip past. You’ll also help protect the sensitive skin on your eyelids and around your eyes. Repeated exposures can lead to cancerous growths later on, so it’s best to choose preventative measures now.

Wear Protection While Playing Sports

Like we mentioned earlier, summer is the perfect time for plenty of outdoor activities. Unfortunately, too many people neglect to properly protect their eyes while playing contact sports. Always remember to wear the recommended eye protection, even if it’s just a pickup game.

And remember that other outdoor activities can pose risks to your eyes. Dust and debris kicked up by lawn work, woodworking, or trail hiking can easily find its way into your eyes without adequate protection. No one wants to find themselves furiously blinking and flushing their eyes with water while trying to have fun this summer. Sunglasses, goggles, and safety glasses are all smart options when you’re outdoors in the summer.

Improve Your Eyesight

Here’s a hot tip for the summer—you can do more than just protect your eyes. In fact, you can improve your eyesight to perfect 20/20 vision this summer when you decide on LASIK eye surgery. LASIK won’t just improve your vision; it will make it easier to protect yourself from the summer sun and weather.

Instead of worrying about finding the right prescription for your sunglasses or sports goggles, you’ll be able to quickly pop on a pair that works for you—no hassle, no worry.

So if you think that this might be the summer you get the vision you’ve always dreamed of, then call OCLI today and we can set up a consultation and get you on your way to a great summer and even better vision.
