Universal Healthcare: The Canadian Model, Be Prepared to Wait on Line!!

With the upcoming presidential elections there will be much debate about universal healthcare. Clearly something needs to be done to overhaul out current healthcare system. Many people have mentioned the Canadian system as a possible model. Let the buyer beware: the Canadian system is not without problems. A case in point, The Daily Observer of Toronto reports patients waiting “as long as 211 days, twice as long as the provincial average and more than Ontario’s target maximum of 182 days.”

Compare this with my patients, when a cataract is diagnosed, they are able to have surgery in a matter of days. With this outpatient surgery, they leave the surgical center without an eye patch and are back to normal activities the very next day!

I realize our current healthcare system is in need of repair, but we must be carful in fixing it, we don’t want to make things worse!
