Eyecare Tips for Holiday Travel

December 20, 2017

The holidays are a popular time of year for travelling with many people venturing out across the country to visit family and friends or even heading off on a relaxing tropical vacation to get away for a while. It’s important to take care of your eyes when you travel so your eyes remain their healthiest and you feel your best while on your trip. Here are some of our favorite eyecare tips for holiday travel.

Bring Your Glasses

Remember to pack your glasses! If you wear contacts, you might want to pack your glasses in your purse or somewhere you can easily access them while en route in case you want to remove your contacts. Be sure and bring all the necessary accessories you need when travelling with your glasses and contacts too. Some of the things you might need include a lens cleaning cloth, eye drops, contact solution, glasses case, and a small screwdriver in case you need to tighten your glasses while you’re away.

Remove Your Contacts

Even during holidays, it’s important to remember to take your contacts out every night. If you’ll be taking a long flight or bus ride, you’ll want to remove your contacts and wear your glasses instead in case you fall asleep during the trip. Falling asleep with your contacts in is very harmful to your eyes. Bring your own contact solution with you so you know it’s sterile. You’ll also be more comfortable using the brand you like and are used to.

Pack Hand Sanitizer

Pack hand sanitizer where you can easily access it in case you need to take out your contacts somewhere you don’t have access to soap and water. It’s easy for bacteria to get in your eyes if your hands aren’t clean when you’re handling your contacts, so using hand sanitizer can help eliminate bacteria before it becomes a problem.

Bring Eye Drops

The air in airplanes and buses can be very dry. Be sure to pack some eyedrops in your carry-on bag so you’ll have them handy whenever you need them. Eye drops effectively relieve dry, scratchy eyes by gently moisturizing them.

Eat Healthy

It’s just as important to eat healthy while traveling over the holidays as it is any other time of the year. Among the top fruits and vegetables for healthy eyes are oranges, spinach, and corn. Drinking lots of water while travelling can help your body, including your eyes, maintain optimal function. Water acts as a moisturizer from the inside out.

Remember Your Prescription

You never know when something might happen to your glasses or contacts so it’s a good idea to keep a copy of your prescription with you when travelling just in case you need it. If it’s been awhile since you had your eyes checked, you might want to visit your eye doctor before you head out on your trip to make sure your prescription is still accurate.
