Can Cataracts Be Reversed?

September 24, 2025

Most people, at some point in their lives, will develop cataracts. Cataracts start to develop as we age and the structures of the eye breakdown. Unfortunately, if not prevented, the only way to reverse cataracts is to undergo surgery. The good news is that cataract surgery is safe and effective. Additionally, because cataracts are so common, there is ongoing research into different and less invasive ways to cure cataracts. In the following article, we’ll help you sort through the myths about natural cures for cataracts and understand why cataract surgery is so effective.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the proteins in the lens of the eye start to break down. Eventually, the proteins clump together and form a cloudy portion in the lens which restricts vision. Cataracts occur naturally as we age. In fact, most people over the age of 80 have either had cataract surgery to correct them or have cataracts. However, cataracts can also develop after an injury or trauma to the eye and after some eye surgeries, such as glaucoma surgery.

As cataracts develop, there may not be any clear signs or symptoms. However, as the condition progresses, you will develop the following signs and symptoms of cataracts:

  • Blurred, cloudy vision
  • Reduced night vision and vision in low light
  • Colors appearing faded or distorted
  • Halos around lights
  • Lights appearing too bright
  • Seeing double
  • Needing to change your eye glasses or contact prescription frequently

If you think you may be developing cataracts, contact the nearest OCLI Vision office today to schedule a consultation with an ophthalmologist.

Can Cataracts Be Reversed Naturally?

Right now, the only way to reverse cataracts is through cataract surgery. Consequently, this makes cataract surgery one of the most common and most effective eye surgeries in the world. It’s important to note that there is ongoing research into non-surgical solutions for cataracts, but the only proven cure remains cataract surgery. While there may not be a cure beyond cataract surgery, there are ways to reduce your risk for developing cataracts, including taking vitamin c, quitting smoking, eating an eye-healthy diet, and other actions we will explore in further detail below. Sometimes, patients like to attempt natural remedies before they come in for a surgical consultation, thinking they might be able to find an unknown cure or a trend from TikTok might work. Unfortunately, these natural cures will not reverse cataracts, so it is important to get proper eye care when they start to develop to reduce the amount of time they impact your life.

Does Castor Oil for Cataracts Work?

With the proliferation of social media, it can be hard to determine what is quality, science-based information and what is the latest craze from a TikTok influencer. In the case of castor oil for cataracts, there is no scientific evidence to back up the claim that it can cure or even improve cataracts. Since cataracts form in the lens of the eye, any treatment needs to be able to penetrate the cornea. Castor oil cannot reach the lens of the eye, and may even cause irritation. It can be dangerous to put anything into your eyes that has not been prescribed or recommended by a qualified doctor, so always speak with an ophthalmologist before trying a natural remedy.

Eye Drops for Cataracts — Fact or Fiction?

Eye drops for cataracts are not as clear cut as research is ongoing into the efficacy of different medications to dissolve cataracts. However, as of right now, the FDA has not approved any eye drops for the treatment of cataracts. Most of the studies highlighting the use of eye drops to reverse cataracts have only been done in animals.

Risks for Developing Cataracts

Instead of trying to find more natural ways to reverse cataracts, the best form of medicine is always prevention. Knowing what increases your risks for developing cataracts allows you to take control of the things you can change. Some of the things that increase your risk for developing cataracts include:

  • A family history of cataracts
  • Smoking
  • Drinking excess alcohol
  • Chronic conditions, such as diabetes
  • Eye injuries and some eye surgeries
  • Spending a lot of the time in the sun without protective eye wear

If you think you are at increased risk for developing cataracts, contact an OCLI Vision office to schedule an appointment and speak to an ophthalmologist.

How Cataract Surgery Restores Vision

Cataract surgery is the only proven way to reverse cataracts. It is one of the most commonly performed eye surgeries in the world and is safe and effective. In the initial stages of cataracts, you may be able to make minor lifestyle adjustments to minimize the impact on your daily life. However, as the condition progresses and starts to impact your daily activities, such as driving, working, or doing hobbies, it will be necessary to have cataract surgery.

Another great thing about cataract surgery is that it can even improve vision! During cataract surgery, your surgeon will breakup and remove the cataract and lens, replacing it with an intraocular lens. There are many different types of lenses to choose from, including premium lenses which can correct vision problems, allowing you to see more clearly after cataract surgery. It’s important to discuss your options with your surgeon as not all premium IOL lenses will be covered by insurance.

How to Get Better Eyesight and Maintain Healthy Vision

One of the best ways to prevent cataracts is to maintain healthy vision. The experts at OCLI Vision recommend the following actions to ensure you have healthy vision for life and can delay the development of cataracts for as long as possible.

  • Use UV-blocking sunglasses or eye protection when outside. Extended sun exposure can hasten the development of cataracts, so it’s important to protect your eyes when you’re outside.
  • Eat an eye-healthy diet. This includes prioritizing whole foods high in vitamins A, C, and E, lutein, zinc, and Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Get regular eye exams from OCLI Vision. Meeting with an ophthalmologist or optometrist regularly will help you catch eye conditions early before they can harm your vision or eye health.
  • Quit smoking! Smoking negatively impacts your overall health. If you are still smoking or vaping, talk to your doctor today for help quitting.

When to See a Doctor

If you are experiencing any of the signs and symptoms of cataracts outlined in this article, be sure to schedule an appointment at the nearest OCLI Vision office as soon as possible. The qualified eye doctors and staff at each OCLI Vision office have extensive experience caring for patients with cataracts.

Even if you are not experiencing signs of cataracts, this is a good time to schedule your regular eye exam to catch any eye conditions early.
