Afraid of LASIK? 5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Be

January 8, 2016

If your eyesight isn’t as good as you’d like, you’ve probably considered getting LASIK at some point. After all, the surgery would help you avoid the hassle of putting in contacts or wearing glasses every day!

But maybe fear has stopped you from going through with it. After all, it is a surgery, and the thought of any surgery can be scary.

Fortunately, LASIK is an extremely safe way to improve your eyesight. Plus, the procedure isn’t nearly as terrifying as most people think.

Don’t believe it? Check out these 5 reasons you shouldn’t be afraid to get LASIK:

1. General anesthesia is unnecessary when you get LASIK.

Nervous about going under? No worries – when you get LASIK, you don’t have to!

Although general anesthesia is highly safe, we still understand that some people experience anxiety related to it. That’s why we’re happy to simply numb our patients’ eyes using anesthetic drops and perform our procedures while the patient is fully conscious.

Now, you might be worried about what your experience will be like during the procedure, which brings us to our next point…

2. LASIK surgery is painless.

While eye surgery may not be your ideal way to spend your day, you can take comfort in the fact that the procedure is completely painless. Once we’ve numbed your eyes with eye drops, you won’t feel a single thing!

If you’re still a bit hesitant, you can ask your doctor to give you a sedative to calm your nerves before the surgery is performed.

3. You won’t find one single case of blindness caused due to LASIK.

Worried about losing your eyesight completely? With LASIK, you don’t have to! FDA data shows zero cases of blindness resulting from the surgery.

Not only that – any complications after LASIK are extremely rare, and if they do occur, they can simply be resolved with another treatment.

4. LASIK still works when you move your eyes during the procedure.

One common fear we find in patients is that they will move their eyes during the procedure. They sometimes think that doing so will cause damage, but that couldn’t be further from the truth!

The LASIK procedure actually adjusts as your eyes move, so you don’t have to worry about keeping them still the whole time. Plus, your eyes will be gently held open during the procedure so you don’t blink.

5. LASIK surgery is super quick.

If you’ve had surgery before, you know how it typically goes. You wait around for anesthesia, the surgery is performed, and you sometimes have to spend days in the hospital.

But LASIK is different. Not only is general anesthesia unnecessary – the entire procedure typically just takes about 10 minutes per eye! So, you don’t have to worry about spending lots of time at a hospital and dealing with a lengthy recovery process. LASIK allows you to get back to your life quickly (with better vision than ever!).
