7 Dessert Dishes to Boost your Eye Health

July 21, 2017

For people with really good vision, eye care is hardly at the top of their list during meal planning. It’s easy to ignore or forget how important eye care is until you have a reason to.

Eye infections, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and several other eye problems can be avoided or improved upon through the right care. One of the best ways to improve your body is through what you eat.

Eating foods with properties that are healthy for your eyes is a good way to maintain and improve the strength of your vision.

Here’s a list of 6 desserts you can add to your daily meals guilt-free, to keep your eyes healthy.

1. Apricot-Walnut Oat Cookies

Apricots are one of the best food sources for Vitamin A. They are loaded with beta carotene and lycopene, which are very important for good eye health. These cookies can be made using dried apricots and walnuts.

2. Carrot Cake

Carrots are another amazing source of beta-carotene. Adding carrots to your meals regularly means that the cells of your eyes will be well guarded. Apart from using them to make delicious cakes, you can also include carrots when making salads and soups.

3. Sweet Potato Soufflés

Want to protect your eyes from infections? Add this dish to your meal plans. Sweet potatoes are a great source of beta-carotene which provides the body with Vitamin A. They also taste really great and can be used to make several dishes.

4. Green Smoothies

Make a green smoothie using spinach, kale, broccoli and collard greens. You can switch up your recipes as much as you like or depending on the greens you have. They are loaded with antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect the eyes from problems that could lead to irreversible blindness.  Drinking this healthy smoothie regularly is highly recommended.

5. Lime Cheesecakes

All citrus fruits contain loads of vitamins and antioxidants, so feel free to use the citrus of your choice. One of our favorite citrus-based desserts is the lime cheesecake. This cheesecake infused with a zesty twist will please both your taste buds and your eyes.

6. Vanilla Chia Seed Pudding

Chia seed dishes are great additions to your diet. They have a high Omega-3 fatty acid content which helps to maintain a healthy ocular surface. The most common way to eat chia seed is by making it into a pudding. You can go ahead and experiment with flavoring and figure out how you like your pudding best.

7. Chocolate-Almond Brownies

Almonds, along with many other nuts, contain a high level of Vitamin E which can help to prevent age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Basically, they protect the tissues from damage. Apart from making them into dishes, you can also consume almonds as a snack. You can eat them straight or add them to your cereal, yogurt and even salad.

Of course, the quickest and easiest way to make a dramatic difference in your eyesight is to have LASIK surgery. Contact us today to learn more – and bring us a piece of that carrot cake, while you’re at it!
