Meet the Surgeons
Henry Perry, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who is renowned as a leading corneal and refractive surgeon and internationally recognized as an expert in diseases and surgery of the cornea and corneal pathology.
Dr. Perry received his Bachelor's degree from Hofstra University cum laude and his medical degree with honors from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Nassau County Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania Scheie Eye Institute. He completed a specialty fellowship in Ophthalmic Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington D.C., in cornea and external disease at the cornea service of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, and cornea research at Eye Research Institute of Retina Foundation.
Dr. Perry has been awarded several distinguished honors including an award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology for demonstrated excellence. As an accomplished ophthalmologist, he has served as Attending Surgeon and Consultant for a number of hospitals including North Shore University Hospital, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, Winthrop University Hospital, Nassau County Medical Society, Mercy Hospital, John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, Long Island Jewish, and Hillside Medical Center
Dr. Perry is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Ophthalmic Pathologists and is an active member of several professional medical societies including the American Medical Association, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Nassau County Medical Society, New York State Medical Society, and International Society of Refractive Keratoplasty.
Currently, Dr. Perry serves as the Chief of Cornea Service at North Shore University Hospital and Nassau County Medical Center. He also serves as the Director of the Research Pathology Laboratories of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and is Medical Director of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island at North Shore University Hospital.
Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, FACS, is recognized as one of the leading refractive surgeons in the United States. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist with more than 10 years of experience in laser vision correction including LASIK and PRK. Dr. Donnenfeld has performed more laser vision correction procedures than any other physician in New York.
Dr. Eric Donnenfeld graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College. He received his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School, graduating in the top five percent of his class. After completing his ophthalmology residency at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident, Dr. Donnenfeld completed a fellowship in disease, treatment, and surgery of the cornea at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
Dr. Donnenfeld serves as president of many professional societies including the Nassau Surgical Society, the Ophthalmology Division of the Nassau Academy of Medicine and the Ocular Microbiology Group.
John Wittpenn, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist with more than 18 years of experience as a refractive surgeon, cataract surgeon and corneal specialist.
Dr. Wittpenn graduated summa cum laude from Amherst College with a Bachelor's degree in Biophysics and received his medical degree from The John Hopkins School of Medicine. After completing his ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Institute at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Wittpenn served as a Cornea Clinical and Research Fellow at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School. He then served as the Director of Ophthalmology Residency Training at the University of Southern California Los Angeles County Medical Center.
In 1988, Dr. Wittpenn joined the faculty at the State University of New York at Stony Brook as Director of Cornea, Cataract and Anterior Segment Surgery. He currently remains a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Dr. Wittpenn is a distinguished member of a number of professional medical societies including the American Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association of Researchers in Vision and Ophthalmology, Long Island Ophthalmological Society, Suffolk County Ophthalmological Society, and New York State Ophthalmological Society.
Gerard D'Aversa, MD, FACS, is a board-certified ophthalmologist with extensive experience in cornea, cataract, and refractive surgery. He has been featured in television news reports and print media, such as the Daily News and Newsday.
Dr. D'Aversa graduated summa cum laude Phi Beta Kappa from the State University of New York at Albany with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He graduated at the top of his class at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, performed his residency in Ophthalmology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and completed a fellowship in cornea and external disease at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville.
He has written numerous journal articles, authored a textbook chapter and has been invited to lecture locally and nationally. Dr. D'Aversa is a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Surgeons and is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Long Island Ophthalmological Society and New York Ophthalmological Society.
Robert Broderick, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract, LASIK, and comprehensive ophthalmology, including glaucoma treatment.
Dr. Broderick received his pre-medical degree from the University of Notre Dame, and his medical degree from New York Medical College. He served his internship and residency in Ophthalmology at St. Vincent's Medical Center in New York City and completed a prestigious two year fellowship in Cataract and Laser Surgery with noted ophthalmologist Dr. Charles Bechert in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Dr. Broderick is an Attending Ophthalmologist at St. Francis Hospital and Island Eye Surgicenter. The New York State Ophthalmological Society was served by Dr. Broderick as its Vice-President and he has also been a Board member for over ten years. He is the past President of the Long Island Ophthalmological Society and the Nassau County Academy of Medicine Section on Ophthalmology.
Dr. Broderick serves on the Board of the American College of Surgeons Credentialing Committee and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. In addition, he is the President of the New York KeratoRefractive Society.
Marguerite McDonald, MD, FACS, is a renowned, board-certified ophthalmologist who has extensive experience in refractive surgery. She performed the world's first excimer laser treatment to eliminate or reduce the need for glasses and contact lenses and performed the world's first excimer laser surgery for farsightedness. She is recognized as a leading ophthalmologist, praised for her accomplishments and recently served as the chief medical editor for Channel 6 News, the NBC affiliate in New Orleans. Dr. McDonald has also been featured on a segment of "Good Morning America."
Dr. McDonald earned her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed an internship at Lenox Hill Hospital and ophthalmology residency at Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital/Cornell, both in New York City, and a fellowship in corneal and external diseases with Dr. Herbert E. Kaufman at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans. Dr. McDonald joined the faculty at the LSU Eye Center in 1981.
Dr. McDonald has been the principal investigator of three National Eye Institute grants for the study of refractive surgery: radial keratotomy, epikeratophakia, and excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy, as well as numerous industry sponsored studies.
Dr. McDonald served as a Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Corneal Service at the LSU Eye Center, LSU Medical Center School of Medicine, New Orleans, as well as the Chairman of the LSUMC Promotion and Tenure Committee. She is currently a senior consultant for VISX, and was previously the Medical Director for Alcon/Summit/Autonomous. Dr. McDonald was also a principal investigator for the Chiron Technologies (now Bausch and Lomb) and Nidek EC 5000 lasers.
Dr. McDonald performed the world's first Summit/Autonomous wavefront-based excimer laser surgeries. She was the second physician in the United States and the third physician in the world to perform CK (Conductive Keratoplasty) for farsightedness. She was also the first North American surgeon to perform Epi-LASIK in September 2003.
Dr. McDonald has been honored by selection to the editorial boards of several publications, including the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Refractive and Corneal Surgery. In 1997, she was elected to the Executive Committee of the prestigious American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), and was elected its first female president.
Dr. David Sachs is an Ophthalmologist specializing in sutureless cataract
surgery, LASIK, cornea transplant surgery, and comprehensive ophthalmology.
Dr. Sachs graduated Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in Biology. He
then received his medical degree, graduating in the top of his class from
Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. He completed his
transitional year at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA and then
ophthalmology residency at Nassau University Medical Center/Stony Brook
University where he served as chief resident. Dr. Sachs remained in Long
Island for a one year fellowship in Cornea and Refractive surgery. During his
fellowship Dr. Sachs specialized in cataract surgery, multi focal intra-ocular
lenses, cornea transplants, and the latest techniques in laser and refractive
surgery.
During his training Dr. Sachs was very active in ophthalmic research. His CV includes numerous article publications and three book chapters. He has also been involved in multiple prospective and experimental research trials. Dr. Sachs is currently a volunteer attending at Nassau University Medical Center where he helps train the ophthalmology residents. Dr. Sachs is a member of numerous professional societies including American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Sachs is an associate in Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island. Jack Oats, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in general ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and refractive surgery. He is also a distinguished member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Oats received his Bachelor's degree from St. John's University and completed graduate studies at both St. John's University and Hofstra University. He received his medical degree from Loyola University of Chicago and completed a residency in General Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Oats completed an Ophthalmology Residency at Nassau County University Medical Center.
