Long Island LASIK SpecialistsLong Island LASIK and refractive surgery patients are treated by the nation’s foremost LASIK surgeons at OCLI. These surgeons are considered to be Long Island LASIK eye surgery specialists.
More than 120 million Americans wear glasses or contact lenses to correct refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia). Refractive errors are the result of irregularities that will bend light imperfectly, affecting visual quality.
The renowned refractive surgery team at Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island specializes in treating these errors, using FDA-approved refractive treatments to correct refractive errors including LASIK and PRK (Surface Ablation). The OCLI surgeons are also trained in intraocular lens (IOL) procedures. Read on to learn more about refractive errors and how the specialists at OCLI can help you to attain clearer vision.
Refractive errors include nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.
Nearsightedness is the result of an irregularly shaped cornea that causes light to be focused in front of the retina instead of on the retina. Nearsighted individuals experience difficulty with seeing distant objects or images.
Farsightedness is the result of an irregularly shaped cornea that causes light to be focused behind the retina rather than on the retina. Farsighted individuals experience difficulty with seeing close objects or images.
Astigmatism is caused by having a football-shaped eyeball, rather than a spherical shape. This causes light to focus on two retinal points rather than one.
Presbyopia occurs when the eye’s lens becomes less flexible, resulting in the need for reading glasses to view objects or images up close. The muscles that control the eye’s lens also become weaker and are unable to bend and flatten to focus light on the retina.
Vision Correction Options for Nearsightedness, Farsightedness, and Astigmatism Laser-Assisted Intrastromal Keratomileusis (LASIK) Vision Correction
LASIK vision correction is a treatment used to correct refractive errors. The LASIK procedure reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism while enhancing visual acuity.
For the traditional LASIK vision correction procedure begins, the ophthalmologist uses state-of-the-art IntraLase laser technology that uses a computer-guided laser to create a corneal flap. The cornea is then reshaped using the Excimer laser.
After the procedure, many Long Island LASIK patients enjoy improved vision almost immediately, although it may take up to six months for vision to fully improve and stabilize.
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK); Surface Ablation
Like LASIK, PRK is performed using an Excimer laser, which uses cool, ultraviolet light beams to precisely ablate small amounts of tissue from the corneal surface. This reshapes the cornea, providing clearer vision. PRK reshapes only the corneal surface, leaving deeper corneal layers virtually untouched..
Custom LASIK/Custom PRK (Surface Ablation)
For patients undergoing a Custom vision correction, the procedure begins with the mapping of the eyes using Wavefront-guided technology. This advanced technology creates a custom blueprint of each patient’s individual and unique corneal aberrations for a highly precise and accurate vision correction.
In addition, a newly developed technology called Intralase is used to enhance the safety of Long Island LASIK vision correction patients. Intralase uses a special laser to create the corneal flap instead of a microkeratome – a metal blade cutting tool used in the LASIK procedure. This “bladeless” approach to creating a corneal flap allows for LASIK surgery to be performed on individuals who may have not previously been eligible for LASIK surgery performed with a microkeratome due to flat, steep, or thin corneas.
Presbyopia is the gradual loss of the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects. Often a natural part of aging, presbyopia is common in adults over 40 years of age.
