Avastin is an oncology medication that has been found to be successful in the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is a serious eye condition that causes blood vessels to form beneath the retina, which begin to leak blood and fluid. These excess fluids cause retina tissues to separate, leading to vision loss, fuzzy vision and blind spots. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in Americans over 65 years old.
Irregular blood vessel growth under the retina is caused by the chemical, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Avastin inhibits VEGF and slows the growth of blood vessels. With this medication, patients are able to maintain or improve their vision.
