Avastin and Macular Degeneration

Treating Wet Macular Degeneration with Avastin

Avastin is an oncology medication that has been found to be successful in the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is a serious eye condition that causes blood vessels to form beneath the retina, which begin to leak blood and fluid. These excess fluids cause retina tissues to separate, leading to vision loss, fuzzy vision and blind spots. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in Americans over 65 years old.

Irregular blood vessel growth under the retina is caused by the chemical, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Avastin inhibits VEGF and slows the growth of blood vessels. With this medication, patients are able to maintain or improve their vision.

Avastin is a prescription medication that is available at the Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island. Contact their office today to learn if you are eligible for Avastin.

In addition to treating patients with macular degeneration, the skilled OCLI eye doctors also offer effective treatments for Long Island diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment patients. They also provide eye care treatments for Long Island LASIK and cataract surgery patients.
