Laser Vision Correction is the name of a group of surgical procedures that reshape the cornea with an excimer laser to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism (an irregularly shaped cornea).
Below defines the most popular procedures performed by Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island’s Laser Vision Correction (Refractive) Surgeons
iLASIK is the culmination of everything we've learned about laser vision correction surgery over the past decade. It combines the most advanced LASIK technology in one comprehensive solution, it is a blade-free all-laser procedure and it produces truly personalized results. iLASIK uses the most advanced technology at every step, the individualized 3-D map of your eyes; to a precise LASIK flap using a laser, not a blade; and finishing with one of the most precise, accurate forms of laser vision correction available today.
LASIK, or Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure to reduce refractive errors that cause nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, conditions that are historically corrected by spectacles or contact lenses. First, the inner layers of the cornea are gently separated from the outer layers with a micro-surgical instrument. Next, a cool ultraviolet laser applies pulses of energy on those inner layers of the cornea to slightly reshape and thin it. Because the cornea accounts for approximately 70% of the eye's total light bending ability, slight changes can dramatically reduce an individual's continued dependence on corrective lenses.
PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is a surgical procedure to correct refractive error by ablating the surface of the central area of the cornea using an excimer laser. The laser beam ablation pattern is shaped to create the necessary corrective refraction.
The Long Island LASIK specialists of OCLI are renowned ophthalmologists, many of whom also treat Long Island cataract and glaucoma patients. To learn more about cataract or glaucoma surgery at OCLI, please visit our cataract or glaucoma page.
