Senior Eye Care

Conditions that affect this age group most often are:

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens which can distort or block light rays from reaching the retina. Cataracts usually develop slowly and cause no pain. However, as a cataract grows larger, it clouds more of the eye’s lens and significantly impairs vision.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. Damage to the optic nerve is a result of increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Increased IOP develops when the fluids in the eye improperly drain, build up, and cause subsequent increased IOP. Over time, an increase in IOP damages the optic nerve and may cause vision loss and blindness.

Corneal Conditions

The cornea is the eye's outermost layer; it is the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. A healthy cornea controls light entry into the eye to allow for focusing on images. However, many people suffer from corneal disorders and conditions.

LASIK

More than 120 million Americans wear glasses or contact lenses to correct refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia). Refractive errors are the result of irregularities that will bend light imperfectly, affecting visual quality.

The renowned refractive surgery team at Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island specializes in treating these errors, using FDA-approved refractive treatments to correct refractive errors including LASIK and PRK (Surface Ablation). The OCLI surgeons are also trained in intraocular lens (IOL) procedures.

CK

CK is a safe, non-laser procedure that can eliminate farsightedness and presbyopia. The CK procedure uses radio waves to bring vision back into focus without cutting or removing tissue. CK therapy can change how the eye focuses light by reshaping the cornea.

IOL

IOL consists of a series of different options:

  • ReSTOR
  • ReZoom
  • Crystalens
  • Verisyse

Retinal Conditions

If the retina becomes diseased or injured, a person can experience poor visual quality. There are a number of conditions associated with the retina and the experienced, retinal experts at Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island combine the use of innovative technology and methods to treat a number of conditions related to the retina including Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Retinal Detachment, Diabetic Eye Disease, and Vitreous Pathology.

Cosmetic Treatments

The cosmetic and reconstructive eye & facial plastic surgery team at Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island specialize in treating and correcting many conditions that affect the aesthetics and function of the eyes, eyelids, orbital region, and face. Some of these conditions develop as a result of a medical condition, injury, or even the normal aging process. Many of the conditions that affect the eyes or eyelids can be improved with surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Family Eye Care

We specialize in a variety of services for the whole family including
